Benefits of Breastfeeding

“In two studies of breast-fed infants involving more than 3,000 children in Britain and New Zealand, breastfeeding was found to raise intelligence an average of nearly seven IQ points if the children had a particular version of a gene called FADS2,” Duke University reported in a press release.

That gene version is “involved in the control of fatty acid pathways,” said researcher and University of Illinois-Chicago psychologist Julia Kim-Cohen, and it “may help the children make better use of the breast milk and promote the brain development that is associated with a higher IQ score.”

Figuring out the exact mechanism of this relationship between FADS2, breastfeeding, and IQ will require further study, the scientists noted in their 2007 paper on the finding.

Drink More Water!!

Our bodies are made up of 60% water.  We need water to assist in digestion, saliva formation, absorption, circulation, transportation of nutrients, and maintenance of body temperature to name a few.  Most people today are not drinking enough water.  A lot of water is lost from our body through sweating, urination, stool, and breathing.

Some of the signs of dehydration are muscle fatigue, constipation, dry skin, dry mouth, dizziness, lightheadedness, headache, decrease urination, and thirst.

The RDA for water is approximately half your body weight in ounces.  For example, if the person weighes 120 pounds, he or she should be drinking 60 ounces/day.  Also, keep in mind that a cup of coffee/tea depletes your body from two cups of water.  Below are a couple of great links discussing the importance of drinking water:

High Heeled Shoes Impact on your Knees

“High heels (generally described as a heel height of two inches or higher) shift your foot forward into an unnatural position with increased weight on your toes. Your body tilts forward, so you lean backwards and overarch your back to compensate….The results indicate a large increase in bone-on-bone forces in the knee joint directly caused by the increased knee joint extensor moment during high-heeled walking, which may explain the observed higher incidence of osteoarthritis in the knee joint in women as compared with men.”

Butter vs. Margarine

Did you know that butter actually has properties to it that benefit your joints?  It is called the Wulzen Factor, which is a hormone like substance that can prevent stiffness in joints, like arthritis. Additionally, butter is made up of saturated fats which help raise HDL “good” cholesterol.  Furthermore, it also contains omega 3’s, vitamin K2, CLA, and butyrate all of which are beneficial to the human body.

Many people think by choosing margarine over butter that they are doing something good for their bodies when in fact they are putting something into their body that is not recognized.  Margarine is made up of many harmful ingredients, such as trans-fats and hydrogenated vegetable oil,  none of which are beneficial to the human body.  Did you know that if you leave margarine out, mold never forms on it and that eventually it turns a pale grey color?!?
