High Intensity Exercise

“I’m too busy to exercise.”  That is one of the most common complaints we hear at the office.  High intensity interval training cuts down on your exercise time dramatically.  Additionally, it is more beneficial for your body than the common aerobic/cardio exercise that most people typically do.  All you really need is 20 minutes 1-3 times a week.  Here is what your routine should look like:
1.)  3 minute warm up
2.)  Increase your heart rate for 20-30 seconds
3.)  Recover 90 seconds
4.)  Repeat #2 and #3 for another 7 times
5.)  2 minute cool down
The intensity is defined purely by the individual.  For example, it could be as simple as fast walking vs. slow walking, sprinting vs. jogging, or fast pedaling vs, slow pedaling on a bicycle.

Super Immunity

I highly recommend everyone check out the incredible book Super Immunity by Dr. Joel Fuhrman MD. My favorite part of the book is the acronym he devised to help remember the essential “super-foods” that will help strengthen the immune system and fight off cancer. Dr. Fuhrman calls this GOMBBS:

GREENS, ONIONS, MUSHROOMS, BERRIES, BEANS, SEEDS

Find ways to incorporate these amazing, natural foods into your diet to maximize your body’s ability to fight off diseases such as colds, flus and cancers, but also heart disease, strokes and dimentia.

Power of Zinc

Many patients in the office have been suffering from colds, flu symptoms and sinus infections. I do not want to get into a lengthy conversation regarding overused, overprescribed and often useless antibiotics (whether pharma-grade or over the counter), but I want to offer a healthy, natural solution to strengthen the immune response and protect the body from unwanted pathogens…ZINC SUPPLEMENTATION.

Zinc supplements significantly reduced the severity of cold symptoms as well as the length of the illness. Proper supplementation (15 mg/day) decreases the duration of colds and flu symptoms by at least one full day. Zinc deficiency leads to dysfunction of the body’s coordinated immune response, which increases susceptibility to diseases. Every one wants at least one less day of feeling in the dumps.

There are many foods that you can add to meals or snacks that pack zinc:

  • broccoli
  • kale
  • sesame seeds
  • black beans
  • pumpkin seeds
  • sunflower seeds
  • cashews
  • edamame

These are the most common among many other good dietary choices. Please make 15mg/day of zinc or foods containing zinc an added staple to your diet/daily regimen to give yourself the best defense against diseases and infections this year!

Ginger Reduces Muscle Pain/Soreness

In a study from the Journal of Pain, ginger root can reduce muscle pain/soreness caused by exercise up to 25%. Try to add some ginger to either your green tea or foods to speed up the healing of damaged or fatigued muscle tissue leading to pain and soreness. Ginger is also great for nausea, motion sickness and proper digestion. Ginger is a potent ant-inflammatory that can also be taken in combination with turmeric and oregano.
